A Trip Down Memory Lane

Review Date: March 7, 2009

When I wasn't reading, swimming, playing piano, or working on my computer as a youth I was likely using Crayola products to produce artwork in many "different brilliant colors". I loved crayons and actually took a trip to the Crayola factory many years ago (back in the early 1990s when the tour was actually of the factory itself). While I was not around to witness the first 64-count box in 1958 I did own several boxes of 64 crayons throughout my early years and actually bought one as recently as two years ago for an art methods class. The 2007 box, however, was lacking some of my favorite colors, which had been replaced with newer shades.

This set revives the original box design and re-introduces the retired colors, most of which went out of production in 1990, only to be brought back a few years later in a special tin thanks to protest from traditionalists who missed raw umber, lemon yellow, green-blue, orange-red, blue-grey, orange-yellow, maize, and violet-blue. A few other colors were discontinued in later years and also make a reappearance in this box. The cardboard box itself may be a replica of the 1958 original but the crayons use the current wrappers, not the ones used 50 years ago. (I never in my life thought I would see raw umber in a wrapper with a website, however, so this is somewhat of a good thing yet I would have loved for the old wrappers to have been used for a truly authentic feel).

The box fits nicely inside a metal tin covered in images from the 1950s. The tin itself is nostalgic for those who used to receive Crayola tins at Christmas in years past and want to add a new addition to an old collection. (The tins are great with or without crayons inside and make an interesting conversation piece).

I saw this tin at a store and decided to purchase it as a longtime Crayola fan (and someone who still uses crayons regularly due to his elementary education major). This tin is recommended for anyone who has always loved Crayola crayons and also for those who need to stock up on retired colors (which are only "unretired" once or twice each decade--may raw umber live on forever).
re-live your colorful past with Crayola!

My sister gave these to me as a Christmas gift for 2008. They include 8 colors that had been retired. The smell of the crayons brought back so many memories of coloring and learning to write. It was wonderful to share memories with the family of favorite colors (violet blue, blue violet, periwinkle and aquamarine, to name a few) I suggest this gift for anyone that may be a slight nerd or to anyone that has a fondness for artistic and office supplies... oh yeah, and don't forget the kids!

I got this for myself & I am very pleased with it. I love collecting on these different kinds of crayons just to see how much they have changed since I was borned.
Great for that young, budding artist

My two-year old "grew" out of the 4-color crayon packs you get in restaurants, so I decided to expand his palette range by getting him this set -- and he LOVES it! Now we can color animals and other things properly instead of having red monkeys, yellow trees and blue grass.

I just wish they'd one day invent a hard, plastic wrapping that goes over the crayons to prevent them breaking so easily when you step on one.
